We are very excited to announce that CodeSmith Generator 6.0 will feature a built-in Visual Studio CodeSmith Generator Template Editor on top of our existing Visual Studio Integration. The team has been hard at work integrating a new Template Editor into our Visual Studio integration story. Without further ado:
As you can see from the screenshot above, the CodeSmith Generator Template Editor is sitting inside of Visual Studio. This means you can use a familiar Development Interface to develop, edit and generate templates. Also noticeable is our new property grid which replaces the visual studio property grid (please note this is in the same property tool window as the built in property window). This allows much more flexibility and power to-do things like dynamically filter properties or only show required properties. The image below shows the result of clicking generate for the currently shown editor template.
We still have more work to-do on the Visual Studio Integration but we couldn't wait so share the news and get your initial feedback. We will be releasing more information over the next few weeks on all of the awesome features and additions to CodeSmith Generator 6.0!
CodeSmith Generator 6.0 is currently in development, and is scheduled for release in Q3 of 2011.

Eric, this is very cool news. Congrats to you and your team!
Wow. I'm very impressed with this level of integration.
Does this mean we will be able to edit text and/or choose from lists in the integrated properties window?
Yes, it will feel like a full fledged visual studio C# document :).
Thank you Blake for sharing this with us..
every little piece of Info about CodeSmith 6 is pure gold
Thanks Blake this is a much needed enhancement. Does this integration now allow for TFS integration as well? Meaning, if I open a template in the IDE and edit that template, will it automatically be checked out of source control?

Yes, This should be the end behavior :-)
This is excellent news and will save a lot of clicking back and forth (and worrying about libraries getting locked!)

Does it support Visual Studio 2010 Express ?
Visual Studio Express does not support Add-ins. Generator 6.0 will have Generator Explorer which will allow you to generate outside of VS.

If you don't have VS 2010 installed, should you avoid upgrading? I just upgraded to 6.0.2 on my work machine which only has VS2008. I don't see any way to edit and compile templates.
